Functional Motions of Influenza Virus Hemagglutinin

  Function

HA is the major glycoprotein of influenza virus envelope.  It has two roles:

  • binding to sialic acid containing receptors on the surface of target cells.

  • mediating the fusion of viral and cellular membranes.

The mechanism of fusion involves complex changes in HA molecular conformation.

Low pH Large conformational changes in HA Membrane fusion
