Functional Motions of Influenza Virus Hemagglutinin

Monomer

Native Form
(Neutral pH)

Low pH form

-Crucial to HA mediated membrane fusion -highly conserved N-terminus of HA2    -lies in the trimer interface

(Wilson et al., 1981; Weis et al., 1990)

Folding of helix B at low pH

The free energy of the low pH form is lower than that of the neutral pH form, by 0.98 RT per residue.

The contribution of the B-loop containing Glu57, Glu61, Glu67, Glu69, Glu72, Glu74 is 3.47RT per residue.
